In this intimate workshop, Korean‑Australian artist Hyun Hee Lee invites participants to explore how language, memory and making can intertwine. The session begins with traditional calligraphic techniques including brush handling, ink flow, rhythm and spacing so that each participant can write short messages of love and wishes in their own language.
Hyun Hee’s practice traverses traditional Korean and Australian art forms, re‑creating rituals, spiritual practices and everyday customs within contemporary contexts. Guided demonstrations will help you translate written marks into stitched lines, building texture, structure and meaning as thread meets canvas. You’ll experiment with special methods developed in Hyun Hee’s studio to preserve the character of your handwriting while adding the warmth of textile.
Whether you choose to contribute your piece to a collaborative artwork that grows during the workshop, or craft a personal work to take home, this is a gentle, reflective experience that centres community and care. No experience is necessary. All materials are supplied, and accessible step‑by‑step support is provided throughout.
Perfect for: anyone curious about calligraphy, textiles, or cultural storytelling; beginners very welcome.
Materials provided: brush, ink, canvas, thread, needles and protective aprons.
Outcome: one stitched artwork and new skills to continue at home.
