Sojourn developed as a direct result of the lockdown imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Working in the studio Bennett’s has used abstract linear drawings to reflect upon his immediate environment, past works and memory. These initial drawings developed into more complex structures with colour and form but still retain the underlying notion of line in various manifestations.
Robert Bennett’s practice has been predicated on the use of the abstract line, drawn or painted and used as a driving force to establish a composition, or as a device to weave a narrative through his work. The linear predominance in the work has no specific objectives or boundaries, often drifting between the geometric and the organic or a combination of both. The essential imperative is being able to connect, source and interpret information fundamental to his art process.
In essence, Bennett’s work is about mark making and building a composition through a process of addition and erasure. For the artist, it becomes a journey through a personal understanding and interpretation of the surrounding world and therefore is always influenced by circumstance, place and experience.
