Relocating to Australia in 2014 from Europe, Latvian born Katerina Apale shares her awe of her unique Australian coastal surrounds through vibrant paintings. Her artwork entwines lived experience, bringing memory and the present into a two-dimensional fold. Carrying with her the importance of being in the ‘here and now’, while still recognising there is always a part of ourselves which is our unescapable personal histories.
Apale is a second-generation painter and has spent time living and working as an artist in Berlin before relocating to the Central Coast NSW, where she works both en plein air and in her studio, with still life floral arrangements. Her paintings become versed in both saturated colour and muted tones, ink and oil on canvas, reflecting an appreciation of the surrounding natural and social environments for which she now calls home.
